What does Breast Reduction Surgery entail?

Reduction mammaplasty, commonly referred to as breast reduction surgery, is a medical procedure intended to eliminate extra fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts. The aim is to decrease breast size, ease discomfort, and enhance body proportions. Many people who are uncomfortable with their large breasts or want a more balanced body shape often opt for this surgery.

When is it required to undergo breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery might be needed if excessively large and heavy breasts lead to significant discomfort or impact on quality of life. Reasons for performing this procedure include:
Chronic pain in the back, neck, or shoulders is caused by the weight of the breasts. Challenges in engaging in physical activities or workouts.
Skin irritation or redness under the breasts. Emotional or mental anguish associated with breast size.Noticeable imbalance in size between the two breasts.
Different Breast Reduction Surgeries available at Gandhi Nursing Home:
Classic breast reduction:
Description: This method includes creating cuts encircling the areola, continuing vertically down the breast, and following the fold below the breast. Extra tissue and skin are eliminated, and the breast is reformed.
Benefits: Offers a substantial decrease in breast size and significant enhancement in overall body symmetry.
Breast reduction surgery with the assistance of liposuction:
Description: This less intrusive method involves using liposuction to eliminate extra fat from the breasts, usually in conjunction with conventional techniques for larger reductions.
Benefits: Typically requires smaller cuts and possibly quicker healing process in comparison to conventional approaches.
Anticipate what will happen before undergoing breast reduction surgery.
Before the surgery, you will go through a comprehensive assessment, which will include:
Discussion: Have a conversation with your surgeon about your objectives, health background, and possible surgical choices. Measurements and pictures of the breasts might be captured.
Instructions before the surgery: Adhere to specific guidelines for preparation, which may involve dietary limitations and changes in medication.

Benefits of Breast Reduction:

  • Relief from Discomfort: Reduces physical pain caused by the weight of large breasts, including back, neck, and shoulder pain.
  • Improved Functionality: Enhances ability to participate in physical activities and exercise comfortably.
  • Better Body Proportions: This creates a more balanced body shape and improves overall aesthetics.
  • Enhanced Self-Confidence: Increases self-esteem and comfort in various clothing options.

What to expect?

After the surgery, the breast is covered with a bandage or gauze dressing. Excess of fluid or blood is drained by placing a thin tube under the arms. Results are immediate but take a few months to be completely visible.

For a few days, your breast might be bruised, swollen, sensitive to touch, and tender. You might be recommended to wear an elastic compression bra to support your breasts during the recovery period. If non-dissolving sutures are applied, then stitches will be removed in 1-2 weeks.

Successful breast reduction gives you a proportionate figure, improves your self-image, and increases your ability to take part in physical activity. The results are permanent, however, in the future, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, gravity, hormonal changes, and aging may affect the size and shape of the breast.

Post Operative Care

  • A cold compress for 48-72 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • For a few months post-surgery avoid wearing an underwire bra.
  • Limit your physical activities during the recovery period.
  • Make sure that during the healing period, the incisions are not subjected to abrasion, excessive force, or motion.
  • Avoid getting nipples pierced unless your surgeon gives a green signal.
  • Do not lift your hands over the head or bend during the recovery period.
  • Regularly visit your surgeon to check the recovery.
  • Take the recommended antibiotics and painkillers to decrease the chances of infection. Follow the instructions given by your surgeon regarding bathing and cleaning incisions.
