Hysteroscopy
What is a hysteroscopy?
The main purpose of hysteroscopy is to identify and address the underlying reasons for irregular uterine bleeding. During the surgery, your surgeon will be able to use a device known as a hysteroscope to see inside your uterus. A small, illuminated tube called a hysteroscope is inserted through your vagina by a surgeon to see into your uterus and your cervix.
Both the diagnostic and therapeutic processes may involve hysteroscopy.
What is diagnostic hysteroscopy?
A diagnostic hysteroscopy finds uterine structural anomalies that could be the source of irregular bleeding. Hysteroscopy can also be used to validate the outcomes of other diagnostic procedures, such as hysterosalpingography (HSG) or ultrasound. The HSG is a dye test that is done in X-rays to determine if your fallopian tubes are blocked. It could be challenging to get pregnant if your fallopian tubes are blocked.
Therapeutic Hysteroscopy
Purpose: In addition to diagnostic purposes, hysteroscopy can be used for therapeutic interventions. If abnormalities are found, the surgeon may perform procedures to correct them during the same session.
Therapeutic Uses:
- Remove Polyps and Fibroids: Surgical instruments can be inserted through the hysteroscope to remove polyps, fibroids, or other growths that may be causing symptoms.
- Resect Adhesions: Treatment of intrauterine adhesions (Asherman’s syndrome) that may affect menstruation or fertility.
- Endometrial Biopsy: Taking a sample of the endometrial tissue for further analysis if there are concerns about abnormal cells or cancer.
What to Expect Before, During, and After Hysteroscopy
Before the Procedure:
- Pre-Procedure Consultation: Discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any concerns with your healthcare provider.
- Preparation: You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the procedure if general anesthesia is used.
During the Procedure:
- Procedure Duration: Diagnostic hysteroscopy typically lasts between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on what needs to be examined or treated.
- Comfort Measures: You may experience some cramping or discomfort, similar to menstrual cramps, during the procedure.
After the Procedure:
- Recovery: Most patients can resume normal activities within a day or two. Minor bleeding or discharge is common and should resolve within a few days.
- Follow-Up: Your healthcare provider will discuss the findings of the hysteroscopy and any follow-up steps or treatments required based on the results.
