What to expect?
Immediately after the operation you are shifted to the recovery room and monitored. If you have been given general anesthesia, you will be required to spend the night in the hospital. If local anesthesia is administered, you will be able to go home.
There may be swelling and bruising in the targeted area that will go on for 7-10 days. The area where fat is removed will feel numb for 6-8 weeks. The result of liposuction is immediate but is not clear until the inflammation subsides. Swelling may take a month to settle down. The results are permanent, If you gain weight, after liposuction, then the body area that underwent liposuction will not get bigger, but the area where fat cells are still present will grow. So try to maintain a stable weight.
Post Operative Care
- To support the targeted area, you will have to wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks.
- Rarely temporary drains are placed in the existing incisions to remove excess fluid and blood.
- Antibiotics are given to prevent infection To relieve pain and inflammation painkillers are given.
- Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration. Avoid smoking during the recovery period.
- Avoid drinking alcohol for the first 48 hours after the surgery.
- Avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy weights until complete healing takes place, and keep incisions clean.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions about cleaning incisions and bathing.
- Do not apply a heating pad or ice pack to the skin that overlies the area treated by liposuction.
- Avoid swimming, soaking baths, and jacuzzi for at least seven days after the surgery to reduce the risk of infection.
- Surgical incisions should not be subjected to motion, swelling, excessive force, or abrasion during the healing period.
